Good times yesterday (9/23/14) rocking with the great Talib Kweli and this kick-ass band at the Sirius station in NYC. The performance also featured Kweli’s new protege and Javotti Media artist, Niko IS. We played five songs: “Going Hard” into “I Try” to “State of Grace” then Niko IS’s tunes “Green Tomato Coupe” and “Private Room.”
Riding off of four shows in two nights at the Blue Note last week (9/18-19/14), the vibe was fun and easy-going. I never get tired of playing Kweli’s tunes. He is such an open-minded guy, never trying to micromanage the sound; he allows it to evolve naturally. I really respect that!!
Niko IS has a very unique style that is all his own. Born in Rio de Janeiro, raised in Orlando, Niko and his producer Joey Creates are bringing Brazilian music to hip hop in a way that’s never been done. I’ve heard Kweli introduce Niko several times on different occasions as the “the best freestyler I’ve ever heard.” That must feel good coming from a rap god himself! Seeing this kind of support and grooming of another artist is itself an inspiration and a testament to Kweli’s enlightened nature.
I have played guitar on some really killer tunes on Kweli’s forthcoming record (title?) and Niko IS’s record “Brutus.” Super stoked for it all to be released..
